"Glassheart" is the debut single from Australian boy band, ELMNT. The song is the first track on their self-titled debut EP which was released on February 9th 2015 in Australia. The song was written by famed producer and songwriter, Dr Luke, alongside two of ELMNT'S own members, James Gringer and Justin Gray. Described as "upbeat" and a "chant-along anthem", "Glassheart" is a rock-pop song with ELMNT comparing their fragile love interests heart to glass. The song was released on February 2nd 2015 in Australia and was sent to US radio on the 9th February 2015. The song received generally positive feedback from music critics, who agreed that "Glassheart" resembles the early hits from Weekend and highlighted it as one the EP's best tracks. "Glassheart" had moderate chart success, peaking at #6 in Australia and #28 in New Zealand, respectfully. However, the song failed to make much of an impact elsewhere.

Background[]

The song was originally recorded in early 2013, taking on the form of a typical dance track with a beat drop and elements of dubstep incorporated. However, after much deliberation, the band rerecorded and reworked the whole song to give a more guitar-driven force. A ukulele was also prominently featured on this new version to give it a country tinge. The main reason for reworking the song was to give it a catchy instrumentation without being overpowering and distracting from the vocals and the lyrical content, which they believed the original version did.

The lyrics focus on a girl who has been left very guarded and bitter towards all men after her last relationship ended on terrible terms, although the reasons for this break up are not explicitly stated on the track. The male protagonist in the song has witnessed how this girl lives her life in fear, resentment and also being unable to trust anybody for quite some time. He knows that he will be able to treat her right and show her that true gentlemen do still exist in this day and age but he fears that all attempts are just going to be shot down like they have been before. The female is extremely defensive as she doesn't want her fragile or "glass" heart to be broken again. Both know that this is no way to live and letting someone in may not be a bad idea but working up the courage to finally let the guard down is proving to be a major issue.

Chart Performance[]

For the week commencing February 9th, 2015, "Glassheart" debuted at number 11 on the ARIA Singles Chart in Australia. It has so far reached a peak position of #6. "Glassheart" also entered the Official New Zealand Music Chart at number 33. The track reached its peak position of 28 in New Zealand before falling out of the top 40 the following week. In the United Kingdom, however, the track was less successful. "Glassheart" entered at number 85 and fell out of the chart the following week. In Ireland it suffered a similar fate too, debuting at number 72 and charting for only one week. Although the song did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100, it has peaked at number 13 on the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles - a chart for the singles which fail to make it onto the main chart. This gives it an overall peak of number 113 in the United States.
