Rest in Peace (oftenly referenced as RIP) is an experimental rock band from Buenos Aires, Argentina, formed in mid-2006. The band is actually consisted only by multi-instrumentalist Eduardo Savino.

Rest in Peace first mainstream success was their best-selling album Stolen Dreams, released under their first label, Death Records. The album sold more than 4.5 millon copies worldwide, and charted Top 10 in every region. Their seventh album, Revolutionary Breakdown, a conceptual album about anarchism, fascism and capitalism, charted at the second position in canadian charts. It was their first major label release, as it was their first album released under Midnight/Mythic Records. This album and its lead single, "Smash Your Head" were both nominated for Best Album and Best Single, respectively, in the 12th International Music Awards. The band was also nominated as Best International Band and Best Live Act. The album won Best Album on the 13th IMAs. The band released their eighth and last studio album, A Different Kind of Schizophrenia, on June 2008. It's their best album to date, showing a completely different style from the past works from the band, and charting Top 5 in every region.

The band's original line-up broke up after their farewell show, which was their headline performance at the second Midsummer Mashfest.

In the beginning of 2009, the band reunited for a short period of time, until all members started leaving and Savino remained as the only member of the band.

[edit] Band history

In 2002, 13 year old friends Eduardo Savino, Miguel Alche and Federico Rosbaco met in High School and they became best friends. Later that year, they started to play Green Day and Ramones songs. With the idea of forming a band, they called bassist Pedro Vuisso and drummer Guido Monteur and they started to play in their school festivals and in small venues.

They continued playing small gigs, but they couldn't release any material, until late 2006, when they release their first independent release, a single called "Palacio de las Mentiras", which would appear later in the band's debut album.

[edit] Death Records era (early 2007-late 2007)

After the release of their first single, the band started searching a record label. They were rejected by respected and now defunct record label Serenade Records, and they finally found home in which would be their label for their next six studio albums: Death Records.

They finally released their first studio album, Kiss the Devil, a compilation of their best old songs and some new songs. This album was their angriest and darkest record ever, giving the band a hardcore image. With their first album, the band started gaining popularity in the underground scene, although they were almost unknown.

After that, the band gave a few concerts and entered the studio again, to record what would be their second studio album, Revolución - Vol.1: Odio. This album was more professional, better, and even heavier than the last album, mixing the punk-rock style of the Sex Pistols with the anger and grunge riffs of Nirvana, what would be a common mark in the next Rest in Peace albums.

Odio, as the fans commonly call the album, had a great success around the World, so the band started their first World Tour, called the Revolution Tour. Ten of the songs played live in cities like Paris, Buenos Aires, Montréal, London, among others, were recorded for the band's first live album, PUNK: Around the World - Rest in Peace Live!. The album featured five live covers, one with David Moreu, former member of the, now defunct, hardcore band Blood Crisis. This album was the first RiP album that charted at the first position.

The band returned to the studio later to work in their forthcoming album, Missing Letters, Dying Words. Although it wasn't a bad album, it didn't received the media attention the band thought it would receive. Thinking it was a pressure or tension problem, the band decided to go on hiatus for a little time. With the time, this album became one of the best RiP albums, with anthems like "Coldhearted" and "Useless".

[edit] After hiatus and mainstream success

While the rest of the band members were only resting, Sav and Pedro were also writting songs for their forthcoming album. They called the other members and they went to the studio to start recording. The result of this was Revolución - Vol.2: Agony. Continuing the style of the first volume, this punk/grunge album talked about feelings and common problems of life. The album itself sold more than 4.4 millon copies worldwide. Also, from this album was released one of the best RiP singles to date, "Hell Girl". But, after the release of Agony, Rest in Peace didn't came out of the studio, and they continued working to bring their fans what would became their best-selling album to date: Stolen Dreams. This album sold more than 4.5 millon copies worldwide, and from it were released the well-known singles "She", "Reasons..." and "G and Destroy". This album shown the band's effort and proffessionalism, and their evolution from their traditional punk/grunge style to something more experimental, slow, and sometimes feauturing acoustic instruments.

[edit] Efímero and Midnight/Mythic (late 2007)

Still in the studio (they had a lot of songs written), Rest in Peace recorded their last album of the supossed "trilogy", which would be their last album with Death Records. This album, Efímero, was the first RiP album completely in spanish, having also the experimental sound of Stolen Dreams. Right after the release of Efímero, Death Records went on bankrupt and Rest in Peace were left behind. Searching for a new label, they signed with one of the most important record labels to date, Midnight/Mythic Records (rumours say that also Eventual Records offered them a contract). After signing with M/M, they started the first part of their second World tour, Stolen Tour '07.

[edit] Revolutionary Breakdown success (January 2008-April 2008)

When they were back from their tour around South America, Europe and Oceania, they rested some weeks and entered again to The Dorc to record their most famous album to date. After telling the fans, as a joke, that the album would be called Regarde Mon Coeur (Look At My Heart) and would be something completely different to what the band usually was doing, they finally revealed that the album would be a concept album taking elements from the '70s punk, the '90s pop-punk and the recent indie rock scene and mixing it someway. The result of that experiment was Revolutionary Breakdown, an album protagonised by a boy referenced in the album as "Anarchist Child". The album debuted at #2 in Canada, and the band members expected something like this because of the "awesome canadian fanbase", as said by Eduardo Savino. The album was nominated for Best Album in the 12th International Music Awards. Other nominations the band had were Best Single for "Smash Your Head", Best International Artist, Best Live Act and Most Hardworking for Eduardo Savino. In the 13th IMAs, the album was nominated again for Best Album, and this time it won the prize. It was the first award the band ever had.

On February, the band went on a mini-tour around the U.S. supported by metalers Chikara and the emocore band fAthOm. They played a lot of new songs; some of them were "Sinfonía Abandono", "1973", "Paracaídas" and "Crash". This songs were more described then as noise and progressive, with a mixed sound of The Mars Volta and Sonic Youth or The Velvet Underground.

Savino said then in an interview that their next album would "surface April or May, and would be heavier, craziest, noisier, the weirdest of their albums." Also, Vuisso said that the possible title of the album would be A Different Kind of Schizophrenia and will be released on mid-May.

The band released a live EP entitled Live at the Aragon Ballroom, with songs recorded at their gig in the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois in February 2008.

[edit] A Different Kind of Schizophrenia and break-up (April 2008-February 2009)

The band started working on their new album on April. They posted a journal with a list of the songs they wrote and asking for musicians to collaborate. A lot of respected musicians, like Moronic Changeling, Ian Picholl, Averex, Pilot, Bad Guys and Gillians quickly asked to collaborate. The album was recorded very quickly at first, but then they took things easier as it would be their last album as a band and they wanted it to be special.

The album was finished the same day the band released the first single, "So You Don't Want Anything From Me", featuring Moronic Changeling. It was released at 0:00 PM, Argentine time. The single was a great success and, besides its lenght, had significant radio airplay. The video of the song also saw great rotation on music channels.

The album leaked onto internet on May 24th and it was released on May 28th, 2008. Fans all over the world freaked out to get their copies soon, as the band didn't let their distributor to give the costumers the option of pre-order the album. It sold more than a half million copies all over the World and quickly became a need-to-buy album.

The band played their last show at the second Midsummer Mashfest (MMIII), which was the headline show of the first night. They gave an amazing performance and left fans freaking out and crying out loud, seeing such a legendary band breaking up.

[edit] Comeback, The Spinning (February 2009-present)

The band announced their comeback in February 2009 and started recording new material. Soon after that, Mike and Guido decided to leave the band again. Because of disagreements on musical terms, Pedro and Fede also left the band, leaving Savino as the only remaining member. "Everything's fine between us, personally; it's just that we can't be together in a band no more", said Savino.
He's recording the new album, The Spinning all by himself, getting help from session musicians and friends, like record producer and ex-Used To Love Her and Self Esteem member Fred Sherman, who co-produced A Different Kind of Schizophrenia. Along with the album, an EP consisting only of jazz recordings compossed and recorded by Savino himself, too.
He recently announced a tour for Europe and South America starting in July. Along with savino, well-known musicians like Kristina Reljić, ex-archaic couture. and Syke, ex-fAthOm will be playing in this tour.

[edit] Live performances

Rest in Peace are known for their energetic, powerful live appearences. They are known for their sing-along nature and fan participation, lighting, pyrothecnics, visual effects and violence (the kind of violence that grunge bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam show at their gigs, like crashing their instruments). In all their shows they put a big screen with the band logo in it. Sometimes, they open their gigs with A Clockwork Orange soundtrack and they also show scenes from the movie in the screen. It's also common that Rest in Peace open their gigs with The Simpsons theme song.

In some of their shows, they play some songs faster than the original versions, just like the Ramones did in their concerts. Savino constantly talks to the crowd and sometimes make references to politics or pop-culture. They have played in the Music Inspiration Festival (in which also Sav interviewed pop-rockers My Freaky Valentine) and Midwinter Mashfest, and will also appear in Oxfam International Fest II and the Festival Buen Día, organised by the band. They were nominated in the category of Best Live Act in the last IMAs ceremony, althought they didn't win.

[edit] Musical style and influences

Rest in Peace is known for their experimental style, going from hardcore punk (in their first albums) to progressive rock. They have cited, as influence, many bands like Green Day, the Ramones, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Pink Floyd, The Mars Volta, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The White Stripes, Pixies, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, The Velvet Underground, Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead. Savino's lyrics commonly describe love or hate ("Coldhearted", "Fuck You"), girls ("Hell Girl", "She"), suicide ("Suicide", "Almost Dead"), politics ("Anarchist Child", "Nunca Más") and many other themes.

One of their particularities was the mix of punk or pop-punk riffs with solos and chord progressions that doesn't have much in common with punk style. A lot of Rest in Peace songs are fast-paced and under the average song length of four minutes (4:00), yet some of their songs are slow (and sometimes fast) and run on for much longer ("Siempre", "Anestesia" and "Anarchist Child" lenght are approximately 7-10 minutes long). Other lyrics have several pop-culture references and others have references from writers and philosophers like Julio Cortázar, Friedric Nietzsche, Edgar Allan Poe, Alfonsina Storni, Alejandra Pizarnik, and many others.

In A Different Kind of Schizophrenia, the band gets to a much higher level of experimentalism, playing with genres like neo-psychedelia, noise, shoegaze and surf rock. The band cites as main influences for the album The Velvet Underground, Pilot, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Moronic Changeling, My Bloody Valentine, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The White Stripes and Massacre. Keyboards and synths appear on all the songs of the album. The lyrics are mostly influenced by lyrics from musicians like Thom Yorke and Lou Reed, and the therefore mentioned writers.

Recently, Savino discarded the possibility of playing again in any tour Rest in Peace's old songs (this meaning before A Different Kind of Schizophrenia). The new album has a sound similar to the last one, but more structured and with more orchestral arrangements. It's said to be influenced by Revolver by The Beatles, Animals and Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd, Murray Street and Sister by Sonic Youth, Casablanca Moon by Slapp Happy and Loaded by The Velvet Underground, among others. "It will be something like the last album, but focusing more on the progressive rock side than the surf rock, punk or indie rock side. It will be something like 'baroque noise'". He also said the lyrical content will radically change, as he said he's been recently influenced by works of poet Charles Bukowski.
